DEATH OF A SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPIL

A sad incident rocks the family of Nduka of 27 Ofilli street Fegge Onitsha.
The news of this ugly incident came to the family of Nduka at around 10 am yesterday Wednesday 28/09/16 that their daughter by name Miss Chidiogo Nduka is dead. Late Miss Chidiogo was an SS 2 student of Urban girls Secondary School Fegge Onitsha.
This sad incident was narrated to have started last week, by the complaint made by late miss Chidiogo. The complaint by miss Chidiogo was that she started having serious hot pains in his knee joint, going up to her waist, after she was punished by one of her teacher, by forcing her to kneel down under the sun for some minutes. This young girl continue complaining about this hot body pains, but nobody could ascertain what the problem was.
This young girl bad feelings and complaints came to its climax early yesterday morning. Late Miss Chidiogo Nduka woke their parents up,  early in the morning yesterday with a very serious complaint on the worsening conditions of the pains over her body.
This young girl was then rushed to the hospital by his parents, on getting to the hospital; it was found out that late Chidiogo has short of blood. Her parents then rushed out to go and buy blood, but on their coming back to the hospital with the blood; they were given the bad news that their daughter Chidiogo have given up the ghost, what a sad incident.

NIGERIA IS THE BIGGEST COUNTRY IN AFRICA THAT THE UNITED KINGDOM COLONISED.

The biggest country in Africa that the United Kingdom colonized is Nigeria. The biggest country that the United Kingdom colonized in Asia is India (which then comprised the present Pakistan and Bangladesh). When the UK came into Nigeria and India, like all other countries they colonized, they brought along their technology, religion (Christianity), and culture: names, dressing, food, language, etc.

Try as hard as the British did, India rejected the British religion, names, dressing, food, and even language, but they did not reject the British technology. Today, 80.5% of Indians are Hindus; 13.4% Muslims; 2.3% Christians; 1.9% Sikhs; 0.8% Buddhists, etc. Hindi is the official language of the government of India, but English is used extensively in business and administration and has the status of a “subsidiary official language.” It is rare to find an Indian with an English name or dressed in suit.

On the other hand, Nigeria embraced, to a large extent, the British religion, British culture – names, dressing, foods, and language – but rejected the British technology. The difference between the Nigerian and the Indian experiences is that while India is proud of its heritage, Nigeria takes little pride in its heritage, a situation that has affected the nationalism of Nigerians and our development as a nation.
Before the advent of Christianity, the Arabs had brought Islam into Nigeria through the North. Islam also wiped away much of the culture of Northern Nigeria. Today, the North has only Sharia Courts but no Customary Courts. So from the North to the South of Nigeria, the Western World and the Eastern
World have shaped our lives to be like theirs and we have lost much or all of our identity.

Long after the British and Arabs left Nigeria, Nigeria has waxed strong in religion to the extent that Nigerians now set up religious branches of their home-grown churches in Europe, the Americas, Asia and other African countries. Just like the Whites brought the gospel to us, Nigerians now take the gospel back to the Whites. In Islam, we are also very vibrant to the extent that if there is a blasphemous comment against Islam in Denmark or the US, even if there is no violent reaction in Saudi Arabia, the Islamic headquarters of the world, there will be loss of lives and destruction of property in Nigeria.

If the United Arab Emirates, a country with 75% Muslims, is erecting the tallest building in the world and encouraging the world to come and invest in its country by providing a friendly environment, Boko Haram ensures that the economy of the North (and by extension that of Nigeria) is crippled with bombs and bullets unless every Nigerian converts to Boko Haram’s brand of Islam. We are indeed a very religious people. Meanwhile, while we are building the biggest churches and mosques, the Indians, South Africans, Chinese, Europeans and Americans have taken over our key markets: telecoms, satellite TV, multinationals, banking, oil and gas, automobile, aviation, shopping malls, hospitality, etc.

Ironically, despite our exploits in religion, we are a people with little godliness, a people without scruples. It is rare to do business with a Nigerian pastor, deacon, knight, elder, brother, sister, imam, mullah, mallam, alhaji or alhaja without the person laying landmines of bribes and deception on your path. We call it PR, facilitation fee, processing fee, transport
money, financial engineering, deal, or whatever. But if it does not change hands, nothing gets done. And when it is amassed, we say it is “God’s blessings.” Some people assume that change is a problem of public functionaries, but the private sector seems to be worse than the public sector these days.

One would have assumed that the more churches and mosques that spring up in every nook and cranny of Nigeria, the higher the
morals in our society. But it is not so. The situation is that the more religious we get, the more evil we experience and worse  we become. Our land never knew the type of bloodshed experienced from religious extremists, political desperadoes, ritual killers, armed robbers, kidnappers, internet scammers, university cultists, and lynch mobs. Life has become so cheap and brutish that everyday seems to be a bonanza and all these killings and blood shed are often as a result of what our people learnt from foreign immoral and action war films.
If i may ask, what did we learn from all these foreign films, how many times have these Whites show us how construct car engines, aeroplane engines etc in these films, but they will only show us how to fight or war so that we can come and buy the weapon they have produced for their business, just to enrich themselves and make us poorer and dependent on them

We import the petroleum that we have in abundance, rice and beans that our land can produce in abundance, and even toothpicks that primary school children can produce with little or no effort. Yet we drive the best of cars and live in the best of edifices, visit the best places in the world for holidays and use the most expensive electronic and telecoms gadgets. It is now a sign of poverty for a Nigerian to ride a saloon car. Four-wheel drive is it! Even government officials, who were known to use only Peugeot cars as official cars as a sign of modesty, have upgraded to Toyota Prado, without any iota of shame, in a country where about 70 per cant live below poverty. Private jets have become as common as cars. A nation that imports toothpicks and pins, flaunts wealth and wallows in ostentation at a time its children are trooping to Ghana, South Africa and the UK for university education
and its sick people are running to India for treatment.

India produces automobile and exports it to the world. India’s medical care is second to none, with even Americans and Europeans
travelling to the country for medical treatment. India has joined the nuclear powers. India has launched a successful mission to the moon. Yet bicycles and tricycles are common sights in India. But in Nigeria, only the wretched of the earth ride bicycles. I have intentionally chosen to compare Nigeria with India rather than China, South Korea, Brazil, Malaysia, or Singapore, because of the similarities between India and Nigeria.
But these countries were not as promising as Nigeria at the time of our independence.

Some would say that our undoing is our size: the 2012 United Nations estimate puts Nigeria’s population at 166 million, while India has a population of 1.2 billion. Some would blame it on the multiplicity of ethnic groups: we have 250 ethnic groups; India has more than 2000 ethnic groups. Some would hang it on the diversity in religion: we have two major religions – Christianity and Islam; but India has many. Some would say it is because we are young as an independent nation: we have 52 years of independence; India has 65 years, while apartheid ended in  Africa only in 1994.
Is time we Nigerians should think home and stop dwelling in uncertainties, let us stop living fake and borrowed life.
Let us start exploring the natural endowerment that God has bless and beautify us with, lets go back to our agriculture, lets go back to communal life and go back to our local production.

AS UNDP ENCOURAGES YOUTH POLITICAL PARTICIPATION, WHY IS NIGERIANS ATTENTION DIFFERENT?

There are example of initiatives supporting youth participation Youth empowerment and democratic governance In 2011, the UNDP Democratic Governance Thematic Trust Fund (DGTTF) issued a call for proposals from UNDP Country Offices in support of innovative and catalytic projects on youth to inform public policy-making, training youth as effective leaders, extending access to justice, opening space for youth empowerment and democratic governance. 37 proposals were accepted, out of which 9 are in Africa, 8 in the Arab States, 5 in Asia and the Pacific, 8 in Central and Eastern Europe/Commonwealth of Independent States, and 7 in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a number of project countries, youth exclusion was strongly evident, often crossing with other forms of marginalization linked to gender, location, culture and/or community. Across the projects, activities include strengthening youth advocacy groups, providing quality research to interact with public authorities, and fostering the creation of national youth councils and plans. Several projects place a strong emphasis on social media and information technology. Innovative strategies range from social partnerships for service delivery to provincial youth parliaments to a digital game on youth and local governance. This group of projects which is unique in themselves, has also helped to inform UNDP organizational lesson learning in terms of the design and implementation of youth- centred initiatives, taking into particular consideration the development of appropriate and realistic youth indicators; institutional and contextual analyses (political analyses) during the programme design phase; and partnership building. Country examples: Nigeria: Participation in Constitution-review process UNDP supported youth based CSO coalition to actively participate in the Constitution review process, including submission of memorandum to the constitution review committees of the National Assembly.
A Nigerian Youth Agenda on Political Participation was developed ahead of the 2015 election together with a Nigerian Youth Inter party Forum. The forum will primarily be used by youth members across party lines to come together and deliberate on issues of common interest and challenges among other things one being expanding the frontiers for youth political participation.         Bangladesh: National Youth Parliament UNDP supported the establishment of a National Youth Parliament to empower active citizens at both local and national level and provide an opportunity for youth to contribute to the framing of national policy through direct dialogue with parliamentarians. Jordan: Trainings to increase youth political participation UNDP has trained a core group of 15 young trainers and piloted two debate training programmes as part of its youth programme with the Ministry of Political Development (MoPD) to increase youth political participation.
UNDP has supported MoPD to amplifying its engagement with youth through Facebook and twitter, with a view to facilitating online discourse. UNDP also supported MoPD to develop a database of youth online groups in order to more systematically solicit input from youth groups on how to spur youth participation in the country’s political life.

Ego Kristi Media Reporting After their Research And Analysis From Awka.

UNDP and UN Focuses on Youth Political Participation, Why is Nigerian case difference?

The focus on youth, in terms of their engagement in the political arena, is a relatively new priority but extremely timely, particularly in light of recent events and democratic transitions, in the Arab States as well as other regions. The “World Programme of Action for Youth for 2000 and beyond”5 touched upon the importance of youth participation in decision-making, but did not offer concrete interventions at the time. People under the age of 35 are rarely found in formal political leadership positions. In a third of countries, eligibility for the national parliament starts at 25 years or higher and it is common practice to refer to politicians as ‘young’ if they are below 35-40 years of age.6 Youth is not represented adequately in formal political institutions and processes such as Parliaments, political parties, elections, and public administrations. The situation is even more difficult for both young women as well as women at mid-level and decision-making/leadership positions. In order to respond to the needs of young people, and to guarantee that their basic human rights are recognized and enforced, young people’s active and meaningful participation in their societies and in democratic practices and processes is of crucial importance7. Meaningful youth participation and leadership require that young people and young people-led organizations have opportunities, capacities, and benefit from an enabling environment and relevant evidence- based programmes and policies at all levels. Realizing young people’s right to participate and be included in democratic processes and practices is also vital to ensure the achievement of internationally agreed development goals and to refresh the development agenda. In a survey conducted by the UN IANYD in August 2012, a majority of 13,000 respondents expressing their voices from 186 countries highlighted that the main challenges for youth were limited opportunities for effective participation in decision-making processes. With limited opportunities and exposure to meaningfully participate in inclusive decision-making processes, young men and women feel excluded and marginalized in their societies and communities. The need for participatory structures and greater trust between youth and institutions and for greater capacity development were also stressed. Efforts should also be made to focus on the most vulnerable of young people, including via specific actions targeting young women. In countries emerging from conflicts, UNDP recognizes that young people can engage in peace- building, leading non-violent revolutions, using new technologies to mobilize societies to bring about change. Young people have demonstrated the potential to build bridges across communities, working together, helping to manage conflict and promote peace. Young people are vital stakeholders in conflict and in peace-building, and can be agents of change and provide a foundation for rebuilding lives and communities, contributing to a more just and peaceful society 5 http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unyin/documents/wpay2010.pdf 6 Enhancing Youth Political Participation throughout the Electoral Cycle, A Good Practice Guide, UNDP, December 2012. 7 Page XXXV, World Youth Report 2007, Young People’s Transition to Adulthood: Progress and Challenges, UN DESA, 2007 8 Participation is one of the guiding principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and young people’s right to participation has been deemed important in numerous international agreements. For instance in 1994, 179 countries recognized the importance of ensuring young people’s “integration and participation in all spheres of society, including participation in the political process and in preparation for leadership roles”. http://undesadspd.org/Youth.aspx facebook.com/UN4Youth twitter.com/UN

Youth political Participation

Youth is a creative force, a dynamic source of innovations, and they have undoubtedly, throughout history,
participated, contributed, and even catalyzed important changes in political systems, power-sharing dynamics and economic opportunities.
However, youth also face poverty, barriers to education, multiple forms of discrimination and limited employment prospects and opportunities.
Youth, Governance and Participation – Major issues Since the Arab Awakening many youth in the region have remained politically active through “political movements” instead of engaging with and in political parties. Young men and women are traditionally active politically in universities (when allowed) but very often disillusioned with political leadership and political institutions and excluded from policy development.
As a result, political activism of youth is not organized according to formal groupings. Opportunities for youth to engage in governance and participate in political and decision-making processes depend largely on the political, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts where social norms in many parts of the world result in multiple forms of discrimination against young women. Both formal and informal engagement can be understood as political participation, and both are beneficial for a vivid and resilient democracy and should be supported.
There is strong evidence that the participation of young people in formal, institutional political processes is relatively low when compared to older citizens across the globe. This challenges the representativeness of the political system and leads to the disenfranchisement of young people.
